Traveling Rhyme Time Preschool Game
By Charlene HaukomKeeping preschoolers entertained on the road can be challenging. Play this rhyming preschool game and put and end to the “Are we there yet?” syndrome. (You may know this syndrome as the “How long will it be before we get there” syndrome or the “How much longer is it going to take” syndrome.)
What You Will Need
Rhyming abilityHow to Play
1. Pick an object. Any object. It can be something in the car, on the plane, or out the window.
2. Now find objects that rhyme. This can actually be very hard to do! If your preschooler picked a cow as your object, you might see a sow or plough, but you probably won’t. If you can’t find rhyming objects, then just have your preschooler come up with any word that rhymes. 3. If your preschooler is having a tough time, give a few clues. Only give one clue at a time and wait until your preschooler is about to give up before giving another. An example of a clue would be, “I’m thinking of something made with apples” if your preschooler is trying to find a rhyme for sky. If that clue isn’t enough, the next one would be, “I’m thinking of something made with apples that is baked in the oven.” Keep going until your preschooler comes up with the word.
4. Come up with as many rhyming words as you can before moving on to the next object to rhyme.
Make Traveling Rhyme Time an Educational Game
Turn this Preschool Travel Game into an Educational Preschool Game! I mentioned sow in the instructions, but does your preschooler actually know what a sow is? Discuss each word that comes up. If your preschooler is stuck on a rhyme, don’t be afraid to offer up a “big” word that rhymes. Explain the meaning and use it in a sentence or two. You’ll not only build your preschooler’s vocabulary, you’ll make the game last longer!Make This Preschool Travel Game More Challenging
Can your preschooler turn the rhyming word into a rhyming stanza? See if your preschooler can come up with a mini poem. Using the sky and pie example from above, your preschooler would say something like, “Do you see that PIE flying through the SKY?”Like this article? Get more like it in your inbox.
