Preschool Product Review – See Me Read
By Charlene Haukom
See Me Read products take preschool reading fun to a whole new level! Photos of your preschooler fill the reading cards, books, and labels, so your preschooler will want to dive right into this whole-word recognition reading method.
About the See Me Read Early Childhood Literacy Program
The See Me Read Early Childhood Literacy Program is a whole-word learning product line. The reading cards, books, and labels help preschoolers associate whole words with familiar possessions and people. This whole-word reading method compliments the phonics-based reading programs taught in preschool.
See Me Read Kit #1 – Kit #1 contains See Me Read Labels, See Me Read Reading Cards, and the See Me Read Book – Level 1. These items work together to help preschoolers recognize words and sounds.
See Me Read Kit #2 – Kit #2 contains the See Me Read Book – Level 2 and a See Me Read Writing Pad. These items are designed for advanced readers.
See Me Read Complete Kit – The Complete Kit includes all of the products listed above. The full kit reviews existing reading skills while encouraging advanced reading and writing activities.
2. See Me Read Reading Cards – The reading cards correspond to the labels. After you have placed the labels on the familiar objects, read each card with your preschooler. Walk through the house and compare the reading cards to the labels.
3. See Me Read Book – Level 1 – This personalized book uses simple, repetitive sentences that feature the familiar objects shown on the labels and reading cards. Read through the story with your preschooler, pointing to the familiar objects on each page. Reinforce what you’ve just read by finding the corresponding labels and reading cards.
4. See Me Read Book – Level 2 – This book uses the same words and pictures as Level 1, but the sentences are more advanced. Each sentence will include other common words that your preschooler may come across in other books. After your preschooler has read the book with you several times, have him/her find the printed word for the familiar object, as well as other common words like is, and, the, etc. Once your preschooler is comfortable with the book, he/she will begin to read it independently.
From the Reviewer
I tested the See Me Read products on my daughter, 4, and my son, 2. Both children enjoyed the products and were very eager to use them.
The Level 1 book is too advanced for him at this point, but he still enjoys looking at the personalized pages. You’ll need to be heavily involved in this step – pointing to the familiar objects, then pointing to the actual word of that object. Ask questions about the object so your preschooler clearly identifies the word with the object you are discussing.
Kit #2 is definitely too advanced for him at this stage, however, with lots of practice he’ll be there in no time. You could order one kit at a time, however, I would recommend ordering the Complete Kit so you’ll have everything you need when the time comes.

How to Use the See Me Read Products
1. See Me Read Labels – Each label contains a picture of your preschooler with a familiar object and the word of the object in large print. When the personalized labels arrive, read through them with your preschooler. Then have your preschooler tape the label to the represented object. If the label represents a person, tape the label to something your preschooler associates with that person, like a hat or pillow.2. I tested the See Me Read products on my daughter, 4, and my son, 2. Both children enjoyed the products and were very eager to use them. What My Four-Year-Old Enjoyed
My daughter already reads fairly well, so she preferred the products contained in Kit #2 (the advanced book and writing pad). Each page of the writing pad has the personalized photo of your preschooler, as well as space to draw and write. My daughter had fun trying to draw the familiar objects, and used the labels and reading cards from Kit #1 to help her write the familiar words. For this reason, I recommend getting the Complete Kit even if your preschooler is an advanced reader. What My Two-Year-Old Enjoyed
My son is just beginning to learn to read. He can identify most letters and corresponding sounds, but that’s where his reading knowledge ends. Younger preschoolers like my son will be most excited by their picture appearing on all of the products. They’ll also enjoy the time spent with you while placing labels around the house. My son felt like a “big boy” when I let him tape the labels to objects all by himself (you’ll need to put the tape on the labels and show your preschoolers where to place the labels). My son also enjoyed taking the reading cards through the house to find the matching labels.
