Water Galaxies Preschool Game
By Charlene Haukom
Water Galaxies is an easy indoor game that’s lots of fun for preschoolers. The object of the game is to make a water galaxy out of bubbles and sunflower seeds. If several preschoolers are playing, give each one a bowl. The preschooler whose galaxy looks most like the picture wins the game. If only one preschooler is playing, then just have fun creating the water galaxy.
What You Will Need
Large bowl of soapy water
Sunflower seeds
Paintbrush or chopstick
Picture of a galaxy
How to Play
1. Fill a large bowl about halfway with water and liquid soap. Try not to get the soap too frothy or you won’t be able to form a galaxy. (Helpful hints: An adult should do this step. Also be careful not to overfill the bowl or you’ll end up with a very wet floor!)
2. Add the sunflower seeds. Drop them in one by one, sprinkle them, or toss in a handful all at once. Let your preschooler decide!
3. Using the paintbrush or chopstick, swirl the water in the bowl. For example, to make a spiral water galaxy, keep the paintbrush in the center of the bowl and swirl in a circular motion. The smaller and faster your circles, the tighter your spiral will be. It might be tough for younger preschoolers to keep the circles small. That’s OK! Big circles are fun, too.
Make Your Preschool Game Educational
Turn this Indoor Preschool Game into an Educational Preschool Game! Talk about real galaxies while building your water galaxy. Just pick out a few small bits of galaxy information and sprinkle them in here or there. You’ll want to use language that is fun for preschoolers. For example, while gathering supplies you might mention, “Galaxies are a bunch of stars and dust all mixed together.” You could also explain that the bubbles represent the dust in the Water Galaxies game, and the sunflower seeds represent the stars.
Make Your Preschool Game More Interesting
After you’ve made your water galaxy, have fun with it. Have several items handy that your preschooler can experiment with. Dried beans work well, even if they don't float. Preschoolers will enjoy dumping them in the water anyway. Or let your preschooler tear up some colored paper to use as stars.
Take the Water Galaxies Preschool Game to the tub! Chances are the bathtub is full of bubbles after rinsing your preschooler’s shampoo & soap away. Make galaxies out of bath bubbles and floating tubby toys. You’ll need something larger than a paintbrush to swirl with – a princess wand or pirate sword will do the trick. When you’re done, watch the water as it drains. The natural whirlpool of the drain will make several soap galaxies.
