Need a few minutes to prepare dinner? Hand your preschooler a bowl full of spices and play the Spicy Memory Preschool Game! Your preschooler will feel like a big kid in the kitchen and you’ll have time to throw dinner together.

What You Will Need Difficulty Level 2 out of 5

Spices

How to Play

1. Choose a few spices to include in this preschool memory game. If your preschooler is on the younger side, stick to 3-5 spices. Older preschoolers may be able to handle more.

Try to pick spices that are different in color, consistency and scent. All spices will work, but some good choices are peppercorns, curry powder, cream of tartar, bay leaves, and oregano. All of these spices have distinctive textures and smells. Try to avoid using similar spices like oregano, basil, and parsley – unless you are working on reading on pre-reading skills.

2. Explore the chosen spices with your preschooler. Let them study the label, the color, the scent. Repeat the name of each spice a few times as you explore.

3. While you work on dinner, have your preschooler test his/her memory. Can s/he hold up a spice jar and tell you what it is? If s/he doesn’t remember right away, let him/her take off the cap to smell it. Does s/he remember now? Just bear in mind you’ll have to help with the scent portion or you’ll end up with a brightly colored and pungent floor. If working with younger preschoolers, it may be helpful to put a foil lined cookie sheet under the spice jars.

Variations of Spicy Memory Preschool Game

Make this preschool memory game more educational by focusing on reading skills. See if the preschoolers can figure out the spices by sounding out the first couple of letters in the name of the spice.

Make Spicy Memory Preschool Game More Challenging

Make this preschool game more challenging by dumping a small mound of each spice on a cookie sheet lined with foil, wax paper, or parchment. Can your preschooler guess each spice without looking at the spice jar for hints?
