What You Will Need
White printer paper or construction paperDark marker or crayon
Space to run
How to Play
1. With a dark marker or crayon, draw the following lines on white paper (1 line per page): straight, zigzag, curvy, and spiral. Make the lines large and thick so the preschoolers can see them from a distance.
2. Choose a starting point and ending point (ex. Start at the big rock, finish at the playhouse).
3. The adult (or designated Line Holder) stands at the ending point. As the preschoolers race, the Line Holder holds up a picture of a line. Periodically throughout the race, the Line Holder switches pictures.
4. The preschoolers must run in whatever line pattern is being shown. For example, if the Line Holder shows a zigzag, the preschoolers must run in a zigzag pattern. Anyone not running in the correct pattern must return to the starting point and begin again.
5. Whoever makes it to the ending point first wins the race. The winner becomes the Line Holder (and gets to choose how everyone else will run).
Make it an Indoor Game
Preschool Line Race can be played indoors or out. To make it an Indoor Preschool Game, walk instead of run. Make it more interesting by having the preschoolers tip-toe or crawl the line patterns.Make Your Preschool Game More Challenging
Search a magazine with your preschooler to find pictures containing lines. The lines should be bold and obvious. Here is an example of a picture with a zigzag line. The preschoolers will have to look at the pictures while racing to figure out how to run. Be sure to give them a little extra time to change patterns before sending them back to the starting point.
